- Understand the importance of BLS:
- Explain the significance of BLS in saving lives during cardiac and respiratory emergencies.
- Highlight the role of bystanders in the chain of survival.
- Recognise emergencies:
- Teach participants how to identify situations where BLS is needed
- Learn the BLS algorithm:
- Introduce the BLS algorithm, emphasizing the "DRSABC" (Danger, Response, Shout for help, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) approach.
- Explain the importance of assessing the scene for safety before providing assistance.
- Perform effective chest compressions:
- Demonstrate the correct technique for adult, child, and infant chest compressions.
- Practice providing high-quality chest compressions, including the correct depth, rate, and hand placement.
- Use an automated external defibrillator (AED):
- Introduce the AED and its role in BLS.
- Demonstrate how to safely use an AED on adults and children, including proper pad placement and following the device’s prompts.
- Manage choking emergencies:
- Explain how to recognise and respond to choking in adults, children, and infants.
- Demonstrate the Heimlich manoeuvre and back blows for different age groups.
- Promote confidence and readiness:
- Encourage participants to feel confident intheir ability to perform BLS in an emergency.
These objectives ensure that participants leave the session with the foundational skills and knowledge to effectively respond to a variety of life-threatening emergencies.
